Lighthouses

The lighthouse has been a part of coastal Maine since George Washington directed the building of Portland Head Light. There are many hazzards to navigation along the rugged coast of Maine and with more than 70 to be found they are a much revered part of the landscape. Most of the structures today are maintained by local nonprofit organizations with volunteers who keep the grounds and houses and towers in good repair. The beacons are automated aids to navigation maintained by the Coast Guard.
